I did work experience in Bad Kreuznach when I was your age. I did work experience with the Oeffentlicher Anzeiger newspaper and it was BRILLIANT. They were really nice and I even ended up writing an article that was published in the paper. :-)

This experience will allow you to meet lots of people, improve your spoken AND written German, and see loads of the local area.

I cannot recommend highly enough doing work experience with a newspaper.

Where abouts are you going? I know the Bad Kreuznach area pretty well, and this time last year I was part way into living in Hamburg for 6 months, so I know there very well too. I hope I can be of some help! :-)

I don't know whether there's a German Chamber of Trade and Commerce in this country but if there is, they might be worth contacting. Are you staying in a hostel or with a private family? Would they have any contacts and suggestions?
