Depends on how you treat them! Are you reliable and trustworthy? Do you keep in touch with them daily to let them know you're available for work? Not saying that you aren't/don't; just a thought! Kelly, Reed and Adecco are among the better ones :-)
Contact employers directly. Recruitment agencies in my opinion do very little and get paid a lot for you working for them.
Which agencies are best depends on the sort of work you are looking for  eg for accountancy, Hays are quite good but for general admin or call centres Adecco are better.

I have worked for agencies for years, and know many people who actually work in the offices.  They can be fantastic.  Many of my friends secured permanent positions through agencies.  GOOD agencies work hard for you, and save you a lot of bother.  Contacting companies directly is an approach that works for some people, but if you then try to go to agencies, it gets very complicated and you can end up shooting yourself in the foot.

spaceyangel - do you want office/factory or catering work?  There are very different agencies for each, although some, like Blue Arrow (don't touch with a bargepole though, imo) cover all three.  Also, where are you?  There are local as well as national agencies.

I cannot recommend highly enough Office Angels -got me a month's work within 2 working hours.  Oh, and I got 30 travel pay this week, even though I get a lift in with my Mum and we only live 3 miles from work!!!

Also Berkley Scott catering get loads of really good stuff.  Through them I worked at the U2 and REM gigs, and the Ashes test in Manchester this summer.

Both agencies pay well.

www.reed.co.uk are really good x
No such thing as a good agency. They are the estate agents of the jobs world. Saying that, I got my last 2 jobs through an agency so I would say a necessary evil unfortunately. The reed website (www.reed.co.uk) covers a lot of different sectors and they allow other agencies to post on their site too so there's a lot of jobs there. Though I must say I rate the smaller agencies better than the bigger ones.

Out of all the agencies I signed up for, they all told me they would get back to me. All except one did not bother. The one that did bother is Any Services Beareu in Long Eaton. A really friendly lady called Sally works there, and she's the most reliable one!!
