oh I agree....except for pretty much all the others :)
I'm afraid I must disagree. We saw him live once and he was so crude. When he was on the tv he was lovely, but we were so disappointed.
Saw him live and he was dreadful. He was on stage for a total of 30 minutes and we could see him in the wing breathing from an oxygen bottle. Extremely crude and nasty.
I never saw Freddie in a live show but I liked him when he was on TV. I suspect he was much different in live shows, as stated here. I saw Tommy Cooper in 3 live shows and he was absolutely fantastic, much better than on TV. I think others have said the opposite though on here. I suppose it depends on your own experience.
Question Author
This was 51 years ago, brilliant, very talented.
His hands like many others e.g Jim Davidson , were tied on TV
I could sometimes watch him and i would be in stitches. Other times i wouldn't even crack a smile - such as when watching 5 and a half minutes of the link you provided, SL.
I saw him on TV living in Spain in his later years. He was a pathetic figure, singing karaoke in back street bars to Brits who weren't interested for beer money. He was obese and very unwell
Not my cup of tea tbh. Depends on what kind of humour you're into.

I think Ricky Gervais is one of the greatest comics ever but I'm sure many would disagree. He's not to everyone's taste.
didn't make me laugh, smile even, how times change.
He was ok, not my favourite though.

I think comedians can vary greatly when live. Saw Al Murray live - very dissappointing but I love his shows. Sa Jasper Carot and Phil Cool live they were superb and better then tv. But my wife who saw them in a different part of the country (I was working away) a few days prior saw a totally different show. I suspect they tailor it to the audience and you may find the 'crudeness' depends on the general audience response.
I remember the first time I saw Freddie Starr on the TV and I was in stitches. In later years , there were times when I would really enjoy watching him. His sketch with Adam Faith, singing with Elvis's backing group The Jordanaires, but then came his downfall and of course he just couldn't perform in the way we were used too, and then his life ended in a very sad way.
I put Ken Dodd at the top of the list, managing to put bums on seats for what, 60, 70 years? That is a successful comedian. Saw him 4 times, always loads of fresh material with his traditional stuff.
His early stuff on tv, used to have me in stitches. Later I found out he could be quite cruel and crude, with live audiance. Also, his daughter revealed he wasn't very nice to his wife or her, growing up. Horrible man.
Oh gawd I nearly had an accident at 3.30mins when he does Adam Faith. So funny.
My dad used to rave about him having seen him in the working men's clubs in Manchester before he became a tv star.
Thanks Sparkly, that was him at his best, so funny and a brilliant imitator. Nearly had another accident at Mick Jagger;-))
My mother met him when she was just 14 and he pulled over asking for directions. She was with her twin sister and he was with another Comedian.

I won't go into details but suffice it to say he's a filthy scuzzer.
What a beautiful looking little chap you've got LCG. Is he as angelic as he looks?
For the most part, LadyB. He has his little meltdowns occasionally but otherwise he's too cute for words ❤
