Are there any laws broken by being left alone for 6 hours during trading in a retail/office environment ?

What do you do when due a break?
I worked alone for 4 years, in a public building where I had to open/lock up. It was local authority so it would've been well within the law.
craft; that was my first thought but you're only entitled to a break for over 6 hours work so imagine it wouldn't matter.
what do you do when you need to go to the toilet? If you are in a shop, do you have to lock the customers out?
My mother worked alone for years in an off licence, and carried the takings to the bank.
At my place of work you're not allowed to be in the building on your own.
marje- that sounds like a company rule/practice rather than a law
