Yes, and in common with some other mainland European countries, they often require id to be presented when paying with a card too. Not every time, but you should carry a driving licence or passport if plannin on paying by cards - especially in non-tourist areas.
I have just returned from Spain and I don't remember ever being asked to enter my PIN, but I was asked for photo ID on almost every occasion.

I have found that the prostitutes in Spain tend to lean toward cash transactions. Although saying this, I have found that several have been willing to accept Mastercard. Good on the dirty ******* I say!! Nothing like a ***** who can't speak English!!! My Mum would be proud!!!

Dean's Mum used to work in Spain and said they were the best working conditions throughout Europe

I live in Spain and we do not have chip and pin and yes you have to produce proof of identity always when using a credit or debit card.
PS it it the law that you must always carry proof of identity with you in Spain ie passport.

Thank you for the answers, I have just returned from a week in Barcelona, I had my passport and my pin just in case and although I used my credit card 4 times, each time I was asked to put my number in the pin machine and was never asked for any ID ( except at the hotel ).
