I was driving my mother's car with her permission when I was stopped by the police. I produced my own insurance certificate on a car which I had returned under a hire contract earlier but on which I am still paying the premiums. I did not own any other car at the time I was stopped. The police say I am not covered by my own insurance. Are they right?
Also, although I am not a named driver on my mother's comp car insurance, there is nothing on her insurance certificate to say that I do not have the benefit of 3rd party cover on her car insurance, so am I covered by her insurance ? McCool

how would we know what your insurance covers and dosesn't cover? Seriously, only looking at the policies will tell you what you are and are not covered for.
your insurance must only cover your hired car, the rules on hired cars are different to normal vehicles, so your moms car would not be covered as it is not a hired car.

her insurance would only cover you if it states it on the insurance (ie any driver over 21 with a full license or a named driver)
the police are right

and no you are not covered by her insurance unless is specifies.
Why are you still paying the premiums to insure you to drive a car you no longer have?
It is a myth that every Fully comprehensive cover will allow you to drive a relatives vehicle Third party cover. It is down to individual insurers policies.

You Mums insurance wouldn't cover you unless you are named on it. If they allowed cover for you, then your mum could insure her rusty little ford for £200 and then you could drive your £100,000 lexus. EVERY insurer would go bust if they offered that kind of cover.
