As its a motor insurance company have you changed or cancelled a policy recently that would warrant a refund - although if it is legit its surprising there was no cover letter.
Fascinating. Please let us know what transpires. I would pop into the bank, explain, and see if they're happy to put into your account. They may well have come across this before.
£75 exactly? that makes it even odder

Have you had any dealings with 118 118?
Perhaps a cashback deal for a policy you took.

Just bank it and keep quiet.
Was there not a scam that after the cheque was cashed the senders then claim it was for the wrong amount or for the wrong person. In returning the money there was a scam and you lost out, I can't remember the details.
Which bank is the cheque drawn on? They may be able to say if it is drawn on a valid account.
Just pay it in and see if it clears. If it is a mistake they will soon ask for the £75 back.
It could be quite genuine and it was an oversight that an explanatory note was Not included with the cheque.

UK Insurance is an established firm that owns Churchill Insurance, Direct Line Insurance and Privilege.

It could be that UK Ins. is making a payment on behalf of one of the the Insurance firms under its control.

Hans.
I think Donny48 is on the right track? If it has a number on the cheque then it can be followed????? I would bin it, if it came to me!
Come on pumpjack, we're all (well, some of us) itching to know the outcome. Did you bin it, or present it ?
I think I would query it at the bank before I paid it in just in case.
Usually there turns out to be a very simple explanation.
Sometimes there is no explanantion but the cheque is valid.
A few months ago I received one for just under £50 from an insurance company referring to my car manufacturer/servicing garage saying "sorry you don't want to continue with your service policy". I emailed them back asking what it was for and details of the policy. My servicing garage didn't know either. After a few weeks of chasing them up without reply i banked the cheque and it soon cleared, and the money is still in my account three months later.

It would be interesting to know what the outcome was for you pumpjack
>I think I would query it at the bank before I paid it in just in case

I can't see that the bank would be able to tell you unless the sender's bank name sort code didn't exist.
A refund of some old PPI?

They have more than one brand, it seems.
Any updates please, pumpjack?
pumpjack,.. don't be like a lot of other ABers who refrain from giving any feed-back.

Hans.
Jack, put them out of their misery - please! :-)
