My car insurance runs out on the 7th of April but I don't want to renew the cover at £500+ as I'm leaving the country at the end of April. I've looked into short term cover but that's come out at £425 anyway. Hiring a call will also cost more. Anyone got an ideas to get cover for the least amount?

Thanks

Contact your existing insurer. (If you insure through a broker, such as Post Office Insurance, you might need to contact the actual insurance company behind your policy, such as CIS or AXA). They should be able to simply add a bit of extra time to your existing policy.
Besides Buenchico’s suggestion; most insurance companies will allow you to cancel the insurance cover at anytime - they will then refund your premium for the complete months remaining on the policy, less an administration fee.

Last time I had reason to do this, Direct-line had an administrative fee of £26.

Before signing up for this option, make sure you know how much money you will pay in total and how much you will get back, the difference being the cost of one months insurance.

Thanks both.
Insurance policies run for 12 months generally. If you pay on direct debit, let it renew and cancel it to on the last day you need cover. You will be charged pro-rata for the time on cover and a cancellation charge (£20-40 usually). Your No Claims Discount will be sent out to you and be valid for 2 years. This is normal procedure in insurance, regardless of your reasons, you can cancel when you no longer need cover. If your policy is £500 p.a. that will be £41 for April + the cancellation fee = £80. If thats cheaper than short term Ins try it.
