We own a car which is registered to me in the disabled class. I am getting a motability car next week and we will be selling the car we own. I rang the DVLA and was told that I can't declare our car as SORN and we must tax it when we send the disabled tax disc back. Is this right?

well,if the dvla told you that then it must be right, but i cant understand why you cant put it on sorn,
I would try again with DVLA as there is not any difference between tax and sorn.

Either a car is Taxed or kept off the road with a SORN?
Will the car be parked off-road in a garage or private parking space when you get the new car?

The only reason I can think of for the DVLA telling you the vehicle cannot have a SORN is because it will still be on the public highway.

It will be kept on our driveway until it sells.
Perhaps they mean it must be taxed for the remainder of August as it has been on the road since the turn of the month.

When I asked her if I could declare it off the road, she just said 'no it must be taxed'! But if I'm keeping it off the road surely I should put it on a SORN? I think I may ring again tomorrow and see if I get the same answer!
a disabled class. car can park anywhere,if the tax runs out, it can still park up. as its tax exempt.just done for not displaying. sorn is for cars that must pay tax ,and will be crushed it duty is not paid, you do not pay this duty your exempt. you must give tax back and change taxation class P.L.G. then you can sorn it.,,.but the new owner of your old car can do this when he puts his name on the log book.
I had a car with class disabled tax before i got a motability car and what i did was let the tax run out as your not loosing any money and then i declared it SORN swansea can't argue then and it is up to whoever buys it to tax it correctly. you can't sell it with class disabled tax on it.
Hi BOB,

I sold my car with disabled tax on it, it just means the new owner cannot have it on the road until the tax is changed.

Just been talking to DVLA. He says that I CAN declare SORN by filling in V14 and sending the tax disc back. When I sell our car, I can then change the class back to private, tax it and register the car in the new owners name all in one go. Just goes to show that they don't always know what they are talking about!
ok but just make sure you get your money back off the buyer when you come to sell your car
