My friend was driving up the m42 about 2 weeks ago with another person in the lorry and was driving beside this car that was going straight up the middle lane they drove to the side and looked and there was no driver they pulled back and looked again and just saw dials in the front. I presume this was powered my some thing so can someone please explain .how it works. This was about 10 30pm and approx 2 weeks ago..Thanks for any explanations.

Thank you for your answer have tried to google it but comes up in foreigh language any chance you can tell me how it is powered. thanks
If you realy did see a car with no driver then it could only be because it was being towed on a A bar or trailer dolly by the vehicle in front.

I didn't see it and you are trying to make my question look stupid. This car was on top gear programme and 2 people were in the waggon and saw it .It went at the same speed and dead straight .would not go faster or slower so think before you try and make people look stupid.
No way would this be allowed.

Probably getting fairly dark at 10.30pm, so they didn't see the dark haired man wearing black who was driving.
Maybe it was an invisible driver....!

Why do some people come on here and blast people. I myself saw this car on the Top Gear programme on TV. Did not take much notice how it was controlled .As I said previous there were 2 people in the lorry and they saw the controls lit up .They drove at the side of it for a long time .The car never wavered it went same speed all the time .Have been told it is controlled by satellite so this is why I put this question up to get more detail.
IF, as you say, they drove ALONGSIDE it for a while, then the obvious thing to have done was to get in front of it and slow down a bit. Then they would have seen it vanish into the Twilight Zone.
Isn`t it interesting that when something like this is reported, it is never be the person who actually saw it?

The person that actually saw it does not have a computer.
I'm sorry but I think your friend was mistaken!! I'm sure it would be totally illegal and I don't think anybody with this kind of technology would take the risk of driving it up a Motorway where it could cause a multiple pile up and kill people!! also I don't think that sort of press would do anything for sales!!
He might not have a computer but he realy needs glasses.

Quality! lol.

In all fairness though wendilla, what a daft question. And getting so defensive when you hadn't seen it yourself...you think the that told you might've been pulling your leg?

Try looking up 'naive' when you look up 'credulous'.

What a load of old tosh.

Last time I looked roads had bends in the them. How would it stop? Change lanes? etc etc

To all those who have blasted my question. If you look under DRIVERLESS CARS you will see a whole lot of reading of how these cars are developed and are being tested and could be on the road by 2020.I myself saw this car on TOP GEAR tv programme but didnt take much notice of future plans and how it was controlled. So to any of you that are here in 2020 just remember how my question wasn't stupid where the persons who said they saw this is right I don't know but I am still trying to find out.
The fact that they will possibly be available in 2020 has no bearing on whether your friend saw one in 2007 (unless perhaps, he/she is psychic)

Everyone is so quick to reply with answers thinking I am naive and stupid.I didnt say I believed what I was told I put the question up to ask how these cars were controlled but after finding out on the net works that these cars are being tried and tested remains to be seen if they have been tested on motorway with out our knowledge. But it has been seen on the Top Gear TV programme.
The type of car you describe was also featured on an episode of Tomorrow's World in the late 1990's. It was manufactured by Mercedes-Benz and worked with visual sensors that recognised road markings and other road users. It was only tested on a test track motorway, as far as I know it never became more than a concept.
