Apparently there is a flap on the base of the front of the machine where you can let out all the collected water/ buttons /fluff/ crap. I want to do this to my own machine but don't seem to have the flap! Where would it be? Do all washing machines have one for htis purpose?

My Miele has one, my hotpoint didn't.

What make and model is your machine?
i have a dyson washing machine and that has a coin trap which is transparent so you can see immediately if anything is stuck in it and so get it out before anymore get in it and really makes a mess of it
There isn't one on our Hotpoint! We asked about this before purchasing and were advised that it was dealt with within the machine itself. Can't understand how this could work, but we haven't had any problems at all.
if you check the door seal round the bottom you should find small items like buttons and coins etc:
