I have seen some black telephone boxes in the London area. Can anyone explain the difference between the black telephone kiosks and the red telephone kiosks?

The black ones were erected shortly after Queen Victoria died. They were painted black as a mark of respect to a dearly loved monarch.
You are wrong there, Thicko. It was to mark the passing of Hyronemous Snuffmuster in 1702, inventor of the water powered egg whisk and patent jelly strainer. He died whilst trying to find a phone box in a swampish area of London that was to become the Balls Pond Road. As Phones had yet to be invented at the time, his search was very forward thinking.
