How can you work out the square root of a number directly ie without using trial and error?

It's not very convenient, but if you look at the sequence of square numbers (1, 4, 9, 16, 25...) you'll see the intervals are all odd numbers (3, 5, 7, 9 etc) and you can work it out by adding on that way.
