That's a pretty technical question for a general knowledge site such as this... you're probably more likelely to get an answer at a dedicated Astra site such as http://uk.msnusers.com/VauxhallAstraOwnersClub or http://groups.yahoo.com/group/astra_owners/ where other Astra owners ask and answer questions...
It depends which 1.7 engine (Vauxhall 1699cc or Isuzzu 1686cc) both of which were fitted to the diesel Astras. I had the latter and the head bolts are tightened in three stages 1st stage 30lb/ft (40nm). 2nd stage 60-75 degrees. 3rd stage another 60-75 degrees. It is vital with this engine that the bolts are tightened in the correct sequence (which is different to the usual zig zag pattern). If you look at the engine from the front there are 10 head bolts in two rows accross the engine. Draw a diagram of this and number them as follows, back row (L to R) 7-3-2-5-10 Front row (L to R) 8-4-1-5-9. then tighten in numerical order (should be a sort of anti clockwise spiral) . Hope all this makes sence as its difficult to explain without pictures. If you need a diagram post your E-Mail address and i@ll send it on. Good Luck I'm going to lie down in a dark room now
