I need one for very close up work I have to do too often, I'm struggling to see well enough.

Are they much the same?  If you can recommend one I'd be grateful

I'll find mine and have a look.  It has a light one side and an ultra violet light the other.

But if you are doing close up work, would a fixed large magnifying glass be better?

Unless you're wanting to hold something and look at it through a loupe, I doubt it would be much help.

Have you looked on Amazon for a magnifying glass on a stand?

A miniaturists platform and magnifier might be your best option.  They usually have positional clamps to hold the item you are working on, a good even light and a range of magnifiers.   Any good model making shop should have them,

I need two hands to do the work. I suppose a magnifying glass on a stand is a consideration.

I'll have a rethink.

Thanks all

If you need two hands to do the work, why consider a loupe? Do you have a (very useful) third hand?

To read I wear a pair of glasses with a magnification of +1.75; I have found that wearing glasses with a magnification of +3.00 gives me good magnification for close-up work (but only over a distance of around 0.3 – 0.5m, otherwise everything is blurry).

A loupe is hands free, gingejbee

^well, one style is and the other style isn't.

Google Hobbycraft magnifying glass there are quite a few there. I'm sorry I can't provide a link

From Amazon I got my son magnifying specs with intechangable strengths. He has found them amazing for painting his tiny detailed Warhammer orcs and the like.
