I had a Sherlock Holmes 50p coin in my change so I kept it just because I wanted to use a loupe to read the writing. Anyway I heard that certain 50p coins are worth something. It's 2019 circulated. I looked on Ebay and they seem to be priced anywhere between £2 and £500. eg

So are there other features distinguish the rare from the common?

Yoiu mean there is an error to look for?

As in all coin/ stamp collections, the combination is rarity plus condition.

The rarest 50p coin has the Kew Gardens pagoda on it, only 210,000 minted. The ninth rarity is the 2011 Olympic coin, 1,615,500 minted.

The sherlock Holmes coin is not in the top ten. An uncirculated one, no marks or scratches is worth about £10, while a gold proof coin is worth about £795. There were 8,602,000 minted.

there was a "mistake" on it. It lists titles of his books and one was questioned as being wrong. The Sign of Four/The Sign of THE Four. You'll have to Google it for the full story.

Vulcan that's what I thought so why is someone asking £500+?

You can't take much notice of the inflated asking prices. They're just being greedy. They'll say things like 'very rare' when they aren't.  Change checker is quite a good place to look to see what coins are rare and what aren't.

You can ask for anything you like.

The Conan Doyle ( Sherlock Holmes) 50p is one of the least rare 50ps.

I've got all of the 2012 Olympic 50ps. None have mistakes as far as I know. Should I keep, sell or spend?

Cloverjo, the 2012 olympic medals vary in worth. Have a look on Changechecker which will give you some idea. There is a swimming one which is worth a lot - some were issued with water over the head and some without, can't remember which is rarer. Football offside rule is also worth more. It's up to you what you do with them. It doesn't matter what you ask, it's if someone will pay!

The pound coin in that link is on offer for £2,500 plus post.

It is said to be rare because the inscription on the edge is upside down.

However, 'There is no right or wrong way. The reason for this is because the edge inscription is rolled onto the coin blank before the blank is struck between two dies to impart the "heads" and "tails". Depending how the blank falls into the coin press determines the way in which the design is struck in relation to the edge inscription.'

The asking price is meaningless.

Cloverjo, olympic judo medal is second to kew gardens in the list, followed by triathlon, football, tennis, wrestling, goalball, pentathlon, table tennis, rowing. The rest are less rare in descending order. Change checker advice is to see what coins have previously sold for on ebay etc and judge from that. Warning though, some coins drop in value or rise, though the kew and olympics have been stable for a while.
