Essentially, it's just a fancy mp3 player...

use your computer, put music on it, then it's just a walkman without tapes or anything like that

things on your computer are stored in files, and are given file types. for example, anything ending with .txt is a text file. things ending with .doc are microsoft word files. there also exists a file type known as .mp3, which is a music format (played by lots of different programs).

you can buy many different kinds of portable mp3 music players to listen to while on the move; iPod is one of them, and is just a brand name, like Kleenex with tissues or Hoover for vacuum cleaner.
and a link for some more detailed information...

I-pods work as a personal stereo digitally storing your music for playback. This is done through your computer (you need a good'un). You upload your CD collection onto your computer (or download if buying on the net) then you connect your ipod to your pc and the songs are transferred through a software package called itunes from your pc to the ipod itself. At the same time this charges your ipod battery so that you can wander off into the hillside making them come alive with the sound of music!

My laptop is very slow and uploading CDs can take some time, but if you are connected to t'internet all your music is labelled for you and stored for transfer to ipod.

Storage is limited to the ipod capacity, and your pc, but as an pproximation 1GB = about 250 tracks ( say 20 CDs).
