What do you think about this camera? Canon EOS 750D with an 18 - 55 lens (F1.3 - 5.6) I know the EOS is good and the lens seems quite versatile.

The 750d isn't a 'really decent' camera. It's mid range. It's also been out about 18 months so there are probably newer and improved models out either by Canon or Nikon.

When I stopped using my Nikon 35mm SLR the lens's fitted the new Nikons DSLR, check out if yours will.

Nikon 401s with a couple of good zoom lenses

You'll get about £30 on a trade in deal for your 401. Film (like vinyl in the music biz) is making a comeback. I'd keep it.

I've used some really good quality SLRs in my time (and also managed to borrow a DSLR) but I've decided that, for most of the time at least, I'd rather simply carry a compact camera (albeit with a 24x zoom). The images it produces might not be of the quality needed for exhibitions or illustrating coffee-table books about travel but they seem perfectly good enough for my own basic needs.

My Nikon has been all around the world with me. I must admit I do feel a little attached to it and it has sentimental value. I can`t really see the point of keeping it in the back of the wardrobe though. Maybe it`s time to trade it in and move on.

I very nearly bought a Nikon d7500 but I did an awful lot of research and ended up buying a Fuji X-E2. The image quality is superb and it's half as big and half as light as a DSLR.

I know Buenchico but there is so much more that you can do with an SLR/DSLR Many is the time when I have wished I could muck about with F stops and shutter speeds and get results that you just can`t get with a bog standard camera.

F401 with 2 Nikon lenses would be £50 to £70 on eBay at the moment, but you can get a converter and use the lens on a modern Nikon DSLR.

good luck with the trade-in - when I finally sold off half a dozen film cameras a few years back most of them turned out to have mildew inside that made them worthless.

18mm is something like 28mm in old money, which was wide angle then, but you can get wider now. You really only need very wide if you're trying to photograph a building across a narrow street... it'd come in useful for the Jaipur palace, for instance. Zoomier lenses are useful for photographing people from a distance, especially if you don't want them to notice or feel they have to pose. I have a little Lumix for that, just a compact that fits in a pocket but with a big zoom. It's iffy in low light but good in sunny countries.

Well I took the camera and lenses to a local company that sell both new and second hand equipment. They weren`t interested as they say there are just too many of my type of camera about. I could sell it them on ebay but I think I might just give them to the charity shop. I`m going to do some more research before I buy a DSLR as there are rumours about Nikon doing a mirrorless one next year so I might wait.

I sold mine to these people but you'll quite likely get the same answer; plus you have to mail them to Scotland (bt they'll tell you by phone if they're not intereested).
