We liv in a hard water area but saw a article in a paper saying fitting a Scalewizard to the water mains input pipe will stop scaling and hence cut fuel costs. Has anyone fitted this gadget and if so would you recommend it.

I once bought and fitted a device which was a really powerful magnet to go round the main.

It had no effect whatsoever.
