was looking through some books at amazon and i noticed some books sell for as little as 1p? for instance john mcenroes and nigel mansells autobiography, is that genuine?

Yes, I have brought a book from there for 1p but had to pay a couple of quid for P&P.
Exactly. They're remaindered books and the sellers make their money out of the P&P allowance.
I would say Nigel Mansells autobiography was over priced at 1p
Amazon actually sets the postage rates (on stuff bought via the marketplace) so the seller is not trying to con you by charging extra postage. The rate is the same for all books. It's just that if a seller has a light book they will probably not need to use all the of the postage fee so they get their profit from that.
Yep I have sold stuff on amazon for 1p. You don't get a great deal of money for the postage but in some cases you can make 30-40p.

Thats better than not selling it at all.
