It is amazing how popular I have become in the last few days!

My popularity has nothing to do with the fact that all the local hotels are sold out for an international sporting event in early summer and I have a big house with lots of room.
Strangers have been calling - I think they simply find local numbers in the directory and hope to strike lucky.
I could make a small fortune (seriously) but I'm not interested, and I am giving priority to my extended family.
Would anyone else do the same?

I have a friend who lives in Troon. Last time the Open Golf thingy was there he made £5000 by renting his house out for the week
Residents of Wimbledon are known to rent their entire house and clear off to the sun during the tennis tounament . They can make enough for a 2 week top of the range holiday and cash left over. I would be tempted to do the same if I was in your postion , it is going to be no fun for residents in London during the Olympics. There are companies that arrange it all for you.
Last time the open golf was in Lytham St Annes a lot of the locals moved out for the duration and rented their houses out for thousands of pounds.

It is amazing just how much people are prepared to pay. One man from the US offered me $2000 for the week for one bedroom (and I have 7 going spare).
if i thought the local authority would wear it, might consider it, add in the problem if the people trash your place, how much to put it right. We are in the capital in a fairly prime location, but not sure want strangers trampling over the place.
I would NOT rent out my house to anybody........well.......perhaps for a princely sum.
They wouldn't want to rent our pokey little house, if they did I would happily move out for a week or two.
As I said there are companies that arrange it all and check the guests, they take deposist and arrange insurance then check it is all ok before you come back. If I had 7 bedrooms I would rent out 1 or 2 at least and stay there myself to keep an eye on it. None of my family members have tickets so they would not be intrested.
thought about renting the house out here for a princely sum - for badger killing. Would command tens of pounds for that.
There were agencies desperate for rooms in houses when the world golf bods came down here to Kent last summer. Personally I would only do it as a last resort - I have never wanted to let a room to a stranger, even for more income when short of money - I can't bear the thought of a stranger sharing my facilities. If we moved out, they'd have to look after the catz, too...

This is golf too - madness, in my opinion, but many people will not agree.
The word 'schadenfreude' applies to all those 'friends' who haven't seen me for years and suddenly feel the urge to visit.
Ah, I'd imagined that your event was the Olympics! We are in demand for that too, only been an hour from London on the high speed train :-(
Why can'r the UK do what the Isle of Man does - in TT fortnight, residents can rent out properties tax free.

Of course, everyone declares rental income for tax, don't they?

It's only a 10 minute stroll from my house to the golf course.
Noone would want my tiny place, but if lived in a sought after town I would do it
I would be happier about renting to a golf fanatic than for the Olympics.
Golf players and enthusiasts tend to be a bit more 'upmarket' . I would try asking at the club that is organising the tournament, they may well have a scheme for accommodating visitors and have checks done on them for you.
what golf event is it?
Nope, the thought of strangers in my house makes me shudder
you'd have to hoover it first, and lock up the sherry and everything. Sounds like too much trouble.
i don't much care for family outstaying their welcome, let alone clod hopping strangers.
