probably like my old ones!....they have rechargeable batteries, and then they won't charge after a few years!........you need to take them off the ceiling by unscrewing them, and then replace them.............
Mine just twists round to unscrew.................
I would have to send an urgent message to my son-in-law.

I can't get into it! It's going to drive us all mad tonight
Some swing down on a hinge. Without knowing the make etc., we're stuck.

Star ... get your son in law here NOW!!!

Slack, it's a white one!!
Does the bottom half not turn round?
Some have two prongs on one side, the square ones. Pull out the prong side and pull down. x
If you want some sleep just use a hammer on it until it stops bleeping...you may need to get a new unit in the morning though ;-)
beeping hell, 99% of them are white. Probably got a nice little red light flashing as well?

Well I have tried the unscrewing method and revealed a plethora of wires (that scared me so I've put it all back again). I shall employ the services of my mate the Electrician tomorrow (if I survive the night without sleep)
One type I have seen needs a small scewdriver pushed into a slot to release a catch, the the lower half slides off to the side.

Look for a little slot with an arrow pointing to it.
Yep ! that's a good idea, ask some one to poke the holes with a screw driver til it explodes !

You will sleep then.
I recommend ear plugs.
The majority simply unscrew as most people have said, take out the battery and unplug any connectors you see. No need for an electrician. Due to capacitive discharge it will most probably warble with it's death rattle for several minutes but will eventually shut up.
