Please would someone advise me how to get chewing gum off of my daughter's black school coat.  It is made of wool.  Some of it we have picked off, but there is still a layer to come.

Freeze the gum either by putting the coat in your freezer or using ice cubes held against it. The gum will become brittle and can be picked off - it's slow and not easy but the only way.

Gef is right: freezing does work, but it is very very tedious!

Stain Devils do a chewing gum remover if the freezing is unsuccessful.  This worked very well on a pair of trousers where I'd sat on someone's disgusting left-over gum (you can imagine how delightful it looked, no doubt)!

Dab a little bit of paint thinner onto it.

My son's new wool jacket had the same lovely, gummy experience! I put it in the freezer overnight, then picked off the gum with the help of a sharp knife. I rubbed the residue gently with white spirit and it came up as new. It's a non-washable jacket, so I zapped it with fabric deodorizer and hung it outside for a day to get rid of the smell of white spirit and it's fine now.
