Wow it's a good job this guy wasn't a Navigator during WW2, or there might have been a lot of 'friendly fire' reported.

It's a pity though that he hadn't got anyone to drive him to the caravan, so that he could have enjoyed his holiday.

This kind of things happens quite frequently.

Aged drivers should be tested every 5 years to make sure they can still drive at the minimum requirement. That would include a mandatory eye test.

Even testing them every 5 years is generous. A person's health can go downhill quickly.

He must have been totally confused (confuggled as my dad used to say) to spend 14 hours driving to a destination only 70 miles away. He was lucky not to have killed anybody.

there are currently 1.6 Million driving tests conducted each year.

There are currently 10 Million people over 65 and that number is rising quicky

OK not all drive but even so it's clear that annual testing really isn't a practical option.

Personally I think it is practical to ask for an annual optician's certification after all the vast majority of these people need corrected vision any way.

Not a perfect answer but a step in the right direction and achievable

I was referring to the "young joyrider" who may have lost his licence. I fell for Gromit's digression from older drivers to younger ones.
