Burglary can be anyone's misfortune and callers pretending to be officials are not unusual. People on their own are often advised to use a door chain, but imagine cowering behind a chained slightly open door, trying to talk to someone and check their identity. Have any readers experienced of this sort of thing? I would like to see doors designed with a panel that can be opened to enable a proper conversation. Does anyone know of such a design?

Some fine examples can be seen in your local copshop!
Don't know of such a door ...but I do fit dozens these chains for the elderly, especially after they have had a bogus caller... the Police inform me and I usually install a chain, and a small acrylic mirror (on the wall nearest the chain).
When the door is opened with the chain in place...you can then see around the door and see who is on your doorstep.
Another item that is useful is a wide angle door viewer....when these are installed along with the chain and mirror...you can almost see around the sides of the door where undesireables may be lurking...
The best policy is if in doubt don't open your door....
Why not use the letter box for any call cards hth Tez

Thank you for your thoughts about this. It seems to me awkward having to partly open a chained door and carry on a conversation with a caller, and try to check their identity before letting them in. I know many people do have door chains and in most cases there isn't much option, but I would still like to be able to speak to a caller face to face if it was possible to open a door panel.

In today's hi-tech world what I understand that our home needs some extra high security systems to avoid theft and beat terrors. So make your home secure by providing grills, extra locks and by taking services of guards or dogs.
