could you clarify the question? It basically means replacing all the old, possibly outdated wiring, with new safer wiring. Or do you mean what it actually costs in terms of money, upheaval etc.
Taking out the old electric wires from the consumer unit (fuse box) to the plug sockets and replacing them with new.

If the wiring is very old it can mean a lot of upheaval - damage to plaster, wallpaper and so on. New plugs and consumer unit, perhaps.

But often, the new cabling can be attached to the old wiring and pulled through. Still a big job though.

I just had some work done and I don't know if it was rewiring or not. They took out all the old "boxes" and replaced them with a new modern one and plumbed all the wires into it- immersion, lights, shower, cooker, power points etc. They did a lot more too, and it cost me 650 but I wondered if I could say tha house had been rewired or not!
i would say you have had your c.c.u, (fuseboard) replaced with a modern one. a rewire would cost at least 1600-1900 minimum, no frills
more importantly have you got any paperwork in the form of an electrical completion certificate to prove that the work was inspected and tested by a competent person
Hi Sacrlett, your house has not been re-wired, what they have done is updated the consumer unit and changed the sockets, switches etc, hope they also upgraded the earthing when they did this work as Terence said when the job was completed, you should have got or they wil send you a certificate, you should also get certificate in a few weeks from your local council confirming the work was done by a competent person registered to carry out such work.
