I don't know anyone who's been successful with growing Acers this year. Ours has now given up the ghost too.
Usually its a water problem. Nothing is simple I'm afraid, it could be over watering or under watering. Most likely underwatering, mainly because its in a pot and it dries out in a day or two in hot weather.
Acers like acid soil and don't like windy locations as well as the other advice given
As quattro says they don't like wind nor too much sun, preferring a shady spot.
