my son had a small crash, he smashed his headlight bent his bonet a tad and slightly crumpled the edge of his wing panel. he has removed all deris, covered the missing light with plastic. There are no obtruding, or loose parts sticking out. Can he still drive the car in daylight hours, to and from work until repairs are carried out.

Legally no, you have to have a road worthy car and that means all lights working even if it is during the day. The old bill take the view "how do we know you won't drive it home in the dark and what if it starts raining hard" etc etc. As for the damaged bodywork, they would make there own judgement at the time.
just a quick subnote an M.O.T will only give a condition of legal roadworthy car on the day it's passed.
