I have a pull switch for the bathroom spot lights. Now, when I pull the cord, they don't switch on - or they just make a humming noise, flicker for a while but don't actually come on. I guess it is something to do with a connection but can anyone help?

yes an electrician can
If it was a flourescent then I would have said a problem with the starter but as its spots then it wont have one! In which case the most likely is the switch itself- switch contact is likely corroded and not making a decent contact. Change it if you feel able to do so.
I'm not an electrician, but suspect that with your spotlights comes a transformer.

It could be this or a loose connection, are you competent to get access to where the connection is and turn off the electricity and check.

If in doubt call a sparky
bathroom lights are stepped down from 240v to 12v for safety by using a transformer and they will wear out like any piece of kit
when you say spotlights ,how many are there? mine has a transformer per light
we had this problem the other week with our pull cord sometimes the light would come on sometimes not then when we did get it to switch on it wouldnt go off turned out to be the pull cord thingy not connecting properly inside where it joins the ceiling quick trip to b and q bought a new one and everythings fine
