I have a hedge and instead of taking the hedge out I decided to leave it in and place fence my side, leaving the hedge to grow. Neighbour has now taken it down is that right? it is still my hedge?

If it was on your land then yes, it was still your hedge.
Sounds like he thought he could get some free land of yours. It would have been tempting to do this because folks generally put the hedge / fence / whatever on the boundary. You'll have to point out to him you still own the couple of feet the other side of the fence. I wonder why you didn't cut the hedge down and reposition the fence further over.
Now the hedge is down why don't you move the fence to the boundary. It would have been hidden by the fence anyway
