I am using a floor sander to sand my floors but there is a black thick paint/substance around th edges that is very difficult to get off and just coats the sandpaper. Any advice as to what i can use to get it off. The floorboards will be 1930's at the oldest.

A good paintstripper will do it!!
As ratter says, coat it with paint stipper, leave it about ten minues and scrape it off. Then (if you've got enough off) you can go back over it with the sander. Though for god's sake watch out for splinters when using the scraper, they really hurt!
