Hi Welborn,
To put your mind at rest, Fig trees are not known to have a particularly invasive root system, they are fairly shallow, relativly thin and soft and flexable.
If you are still worried, you could root prune it by digging a small trench with a spade around it at about 18" out from the trunk and about a foot deep. This will have a stunting effect on the tree and stop it from becoming too big.
If your still in doubt get an expert in to do a survey on the likelyhood of subsidence. Good Luck Tbird+
I have a fig tree - but before I bought it I read up on it on lots and lots of sites and they all said the same thing - plant it in a Big pot as the roots will spread everywhere and planting it in a pot stops this happening... It sems to have been a success as I have lots of fruit on it.
