Is it possible to use ashes from my open fire in my garden in any way? Can they go on a compost heap?

Ashes from coal, coke or brickets are Not recomended but wood and pure charcoal ash is okay and it's rich in potassium too but should only be added sparingly and mixed in well or it will make your compost very alkaline and slow up the decomposition proccess.
Ashes from a coal fire will break up the soil if there is a lot of clay without doing any harm
