any idea how to remove glue left on skirting boards by carpet fitter tried nearly everything to no avail.

As it troubles you why not replace the skirting boards and start afresh?

Try a heat from an hairdryer and scrape away.

The only way is to rub down and repaint the skirting boards, very common thing to happen on new houses, we always bill the fitter after too.
