Duck tape/gaffa(?) tape - is it the same thing?

Americans and English, as Winston Churchill, I believe, said are two closely related peoples seperated by a common language... so forgive me, I haven't a clue as to what gaffa tape is. However, Duck tape is a corruption of the original term Duct tape. it was used, originally, to seal the seams on the sheet metal ducting used in heating and cooling of various buildings...
Just as DUCK is a brand name of DUCT tape, GAFFA is a brand of GAFFER tape.
