I am under the impression that re-chareable batteries are best re-charged when they are depleted.
Is there any way to deplete sets of batteries ready for rechargeing other than putting them in a torch till tlhey run down.
Also is it true that in low (freezing) temperatures batteries deplete quicker.
Thanks

You had to do that with some of the older rechargable battery technologies. Newer ones, Ni-MH and Lithium-ion batteries, do not require you to do this. Though it's still good to almost fully deplete the batteries once every 30 charge cycles or so. Otherwise just charge when you need to.

And yes, batteries don't last as long in very cold and very hot conditions.
