I`ve got a tree that`s got some fruit on it. How can I tell if it`s a plum tree or damson or what?? The tree has been growing for years & only this year has fruit on it. My neighbour has the same tree & theirs has started to grow the same fruit. Thanks

Ask your neighbour or look up up leaf identification on internet.
Damsons are much smaller than plums - at least half the size and even when very ripe are quite bitter and tart. Most plums are fairly sweet to eat uncooked. Even a ripe damson will make your mouth pucker if you try to eat it. You may need to wait for another couple of weeks before checking. Don't think damsons normally ripen until September.

Thank you both.
One variety of plum that I have noticed to have produced lots of fruit this year is the cherry plum or myrobalan plum.
Normaly it gets a few yellow plums, if any at all but this year has been exeptional with lots of red fully ripened fruit.
Google the name for images for this and other varieties of plum, to see if you can match it.
Ps if this is the one you have its an exellent one for jam making! Good Luck Tbird+

The fruit on it are a dark purple colour. The tree has been in the garden for over 20 years & nothing has EVER grown on it untill this summer. My neighbour is none the wiser either, but they`ve only lived there less than a year. Mystery lol.

Well, I tried one of the fruits yesterday & it`s definately plum. Quite nice to. They are very small though. Thanks for your replies.
