My vacuum cleaner is very old but still picks up surface dirt. However when I put my hand underneath it, there is no suction (yes it is switched on!). I really want a vacuum cleaner that gets the dirt out of the carpet not just on the surface -- are all vacuums the same, or is mine ready for the tip? And what would you recommend?

Where have you been for the last 5 years.Dyson hoovers are absolutly fantastic. You will be so shocked with the amount of rubbish that will come out of your carpet. You can now pick up a Dyson DC07 from Currys, Factory Shack and Argos for about 150.

You wont regret it!!!!!!!

Dyson? Avoid them like the plague. Read how the DC07 scored a mere 3.9 out of 10 for 'value for money' from 35 reviews
Agree r4zorb4ck,Dyson,EXCELLENT,i've had no trouble with mine at all,!!!
I have two small Miele cylinder vacuum cleaners - one for upstairs and one for downstairs and the suction on both is really terrific. Last week I knocked a ball of garden string on the floor (where you pull out the string from the centre) and was too lazy to pick it up immediately. I tried to vacuum around it but within seconds the tail end of the string had disappeared up the pipe followed immediately by most of the ball. It took me 20 minutes to pull all the string back out from the innards of the cleaner and rewind it into a ball.. These machines definitely suck in the true sense of the word. Can defininitely recommend them.

i have a dyson dco1 its a few years old now . they are the best you can get if looked after . clean them regulary and they will last forever workin as good as when you first bought it

Yeah Miele are excellent build quality for a bagged cylinder but if you go for a bagless upright then the Dyson cleaner is for you. Comet is the place to go with a great selection of both. Otherwise you may find just renewing all the filters and bags and giving it a good clean out may make a lot of difference.
