Any ant- powder does the trick, although they always come back after a while- there's too many of the sods to ever eliminate them totally.
Pour boiling water on the b*****s if u dont want to use powder - both methods are a quick fix thats for sure!!
Yes its that time of year folks. I agree with the boiling water answer from n00dles - but you will probably have to try a few times and every year they do seem to come back.
Buy 1 or several anteaters
We recently had problems with ants in the house and bought some little flat plastic containers called Ant Bait Stations. You pull a couple of tiny clips off them and the ants go inside, feed on the bait and take it back to their nest. Within 24 hours every single ant had disappeared. I'm sure you could use these outside although you would have to cover them in case it rains and moisture leaks inside the air holes. Powder will also work but it looks terribly messy and the effects are eliminated by rain. Boiling water also works.
I agree with WendyS about the ant bait traps. They definitely work. I also use the Nippon liquid and put a generous sized drop in various places near our patio door, where they seem to congregate. They dive into this with gusto and also take it back to the nest.
I use the aint bait in the plastic boxes. It`s great. Tesco sell it or Betterwear.

My ant problem was so bad I had to pay for the Council to come out. The man told me I had wasted my money, the best thing to use was two parts borax powder (available from chemists) and one part granulated sugar. Mix together and sprinkle where ants run. They take the sugar coated with the borax back to the next where they are killed by something called osmosis. I think they swell and burst (sorry). Anyway it worked for me and the ants hopped it.
