Some practical advice please. My wife who is slightly arthritic has a shower mat to stand on which is made of non-slip rubber. After a few weeks this mat becomes discoloured with blackish stains no matter how often it is cleaned. Can anyone suggest a cleaner that will remove these stains or better still, something that will prevent them in the first place. We go through several a year.

The stain is likely to be mould growth. Try dipping an old tooth brush in a quality thick bleach sollution, give it a good scrub and rinse thoroughly after 20 minutes.

Thunderbird beat me to it and her suggestion should work. Also if the mat is permanently stored in the damp shallow base of the shower cubicle it's very easy for mould to accumulate. If you have somewhere in the bathroom to hang it up near an open window, now the weather is getting warmer, this will help mould forming, as will putting it out in the garden regularly in bright sunshine.

I put mine in the washing machine.

I am grateful to all three of you, I really am, I will take all your advice and try all of what you suggest. On a lighter note I think I will use at least an old nail brush to scrub it with bleach Thunderbird. Wendy, I will certainly try the open window solution but as far as sunshine is concerned, what sunshine? There hasn't been any this year above 53 degrees north and I've tried that Val but I'm afraid she wouldn't fit-- must obtain a larger washing machine. All good fun, thanks a lot girls.
