rads or pump need fixing

im having problems with my heating i have hot water but no heat in bottom rad and upstairs only lukewarm.


my husband has bled the rads but unsure if we must stop when water pours out or empty them - or is the pump broke. please help!!

To bleed the radiators, loosen the screw at the top and wait until water starts to come out, then tighten the screw again.


The problem could be the pump, or it could be a valve that diverts hot water to the cylinder or to the radiators. This is normally a small squarish silver box in the cylinder cupboard with 3 pipes and a small lever. It might be worth trying the lever in different positions.


From what you describe it sounds like the pump might have gone. Sometimes they seize and can be fixed by turning the system off completely and using a screwdriver to turn the pump a few times. This might only be a temporary solution, though, as the pump may be on its way out.
