ornamental cherry

did she like birds? bird bath.

A seat somwhere in the garden that she liked

a plant that bears her name

something that flowers in the season that she loved best

A small ornamental tree for me too....maybe a cherry as mentioned or a crab apple. Weeping pears are nice too and for something more exotic, a foxglove tree (Paulonia) or Indian bean tree (Catalpa) make superb 8' clumped trees if cut down each year

A standard rose, maybe you could find one with her name.

Same as maggie01. We've got a standard rose called 'Remember Me' for my dad. It was planted on his ashes and every bloom comes from him. And it has to be tended, cared for and loved - as in life. Plant it where it can be seen from the window and your mum will never be forgotten.

That's a lovely idea maggie, do you know how i would go about that.

Thanks derekpara, that sounds ideal.
sandrajo, I would do some hunting for rose varieties on google. I found a site called everyrose.com which lets you browse alphabetically or search for a name (I found Patricia and Lorraine). If you don't find a name you like, you can look for other meaningful names -- a place name, or a meaningful phrase like derekpara's Remember Me. Of course then comes the task of actually getting the rose with the name you choose...

you can organise to crossbreed a few varieties of rose and name the new variety after your mum.

I saw peter cushing do this for his wife, who had died - he wrote to jim'll fix it and they agreed to do because it was such a lovely request - try www.worldofroses.com to get your own one made

you could also hire a local sculptor to make a bust of your mum and turn it into a water fountain
