Have recently moved to this house and despite the very hot weather and no rain here in SE England my front garden lawn is very green. I havn't cut it in the 3 weeks I have been here and certainly have not been watering it. I am now worried I may have a water leak. How do I find this out and what do I do about it. There are no visible signs on the lawn except now it does want to be mowed although the earth under the grass seems to be cracked. It might be very green as the previous owner may have treated it with fertiliser etc. I have no way of knowing this and don't know may neighbours well enough to ask. Any advice would be appreciated Thanks

A good way to get to know your new neighbours.
Not artificial is it ?
If it was a leak you would probably have dry areas and a green patch. It might be a high water table, are you in a valley, or the bottom of a hill.
I thought that, but with the earth underneath cracked I wouldn't think so. could be wrong of course!
May well have been treated with a growth inhibitor, it would need less water as well as less cutting, but would show gaps over time

I am on an ordinary housing estate. The other lawns around me are dry and going brown but mine is very green (not artificial) I know its a stupid thing to worry about but when you are widowed and live on your own these sort of things do worry you. and as I am new to the area I don't know of anyone who can give me advice
Check you water meter for peace of mind. If your green bit ends exactly at your garden border is be inclined to think it's more to do with the grass variety, what's been put on it, or the like, than water that could flow all over.

Thanks Old Geezer, I am hoping you are right. Re the water meter, I didn't read it when I moved in as I find them difficult to read, Is it worth contacting the water board
Parts of our lawn are looking relatively green because of some fertiliser I put down ahead of the drought.

Suggest you get to the problem before any hosepipe ban in case you get accused of anything.
rowan, lawn growth inhibitors are no longer sold in the uk
It may be worthwhile asking advice from your water provider.

A possible explanation might be that your lawn may be shaded from the midday sun, unlike some other lawns in the area.
For your information: if you think that you have a water leak on your property, you simply contact your water company (phone number on bill) and ask them to investigate. An inspector will come and see what's going on (no charge).....but a repair MAY be chargeable, depending on it's location.
