Are there any laws regarding bonfires?

On Saturday I did a 2 loads of washing and hung it outside to dry. As I had 2 loads I had to put some out later as well. I went to check on the 2nd load between 5 and 6 and my neighbour 2 doors down had a bonfire going and all my clothes of smoke.

I had to rewash everything today and put it out to dry. About half an hour ago I started to smell smoke again so I rushed out to grab my washing which I did just in time.

I've had to close all of my windows even though its hot!!

It's not just me. I live 2 doors down and the neighbour's either side of them have also been affected, probably even more so than me.

Just found out from my other neighbour that they're having a garden clear out. She said that they were probably unaware that our council has a garden waste service.
Our council has a Garden waste service , but they have just decided to charge £40 a year for it. So I expect more bonfires.
£40 a year doesn't seem too much.
^ Yes but there is a lot of argument over it. So far less than 25% of residents have signed up.
Count yourself lucky Eddie, I pay more than £1 per week and I'd pay more if I didn't pay by DD.
You could always bring it to the tip.
We pay £40 a year for a garden waste collection every 2 weeks - it's totally money well spent, a godsend in fact, no more trips to the dump or piles of mess in the garden.
I begrudge paying since, until they thought of another way to fleece one section of the community, it was a domestic rate provided service. I didn't see my charge drop when they opted to refuse to provide the service paid for, unless one paid a second time. But the salt in the wound was some garbage excuse of not everyone needing the service so that meant they were entitled to rip of just the section of us who provided the beautiful views, and worked at them, for the sake of all. If one only pays for services used there is no need for a common kitty to pay for common services, so I want my money back for all those I not used over the decades.
The council had to ban bonfires on allotments as the situation got really bad...fights, arguments etc.
Here everyone has bonfires, it's the country and people burn their garden stuff etc in preference to going to the tip, tbh it would never have occurred to me that it would upset anyone but we are quite rural rather than being in a street where I can see it might affect other people.
Bonfires in the country are lovely. The smell of woodsmoke in the autumn is lovely. Not so in urban areas though.
Country folk see bonfires as entertainment....bless:-)
We do, we have great big ones in January to 'wake up the apple trees', everyone gets hammered and it's like the end of The Wicker Man Melv :)
No we don't
We had a bonfire a few years ago which, I admit, was quite smokey. Neighbour then opened her windows (which had previously been closed) before sending her husband round with a henchman to complain that his house smelled of smoke! Some people are just plain unreasonable. Live in the country - expect bonfires as normal rural practice.
I seem to remember an unwritten rule about not lighting garden fires until after 6pm, mainly on account of people's washing, but nice summer days mean that barbeque parties now need to be considered. Maybe we are not as considerate as we once were...
Nb. I don't think that there are any rules or regulations against placing a reasonable amount of garden waste in your normal (landfill) bin.
