Listening to Earl Spencer being interviewed just now, on the Today Programme, I am still amazed that the powers-to-be made those poor boys walk behind their Mum's coffin. I will never, ever forgive those responsible for that despicable act.

But Spencer didn't appear to do anything to stop it. Considering the excoriating eulogy that he gave, I now find that rather puzzling.

Trying to stick to the OP ... It was an interview that was conducted as the 20th anniversary of the death is approaching. Earl Spencer chose to use part of the interview to point out that he was lied to re: the boy's desire to walk behind the coffin. Possible reactions: 1) He's a liar. He wasn't lied to. (I think but am not sure that William and/or Harry have said...

poor boys...agree it was awful for them
I agree. My heart broke looking at little Harry's face.

They're Royal, Royals do that.
the whole situation was handled abysmally.
Didn't Harry say a few weeks/days ago that no child should ever have to walk behind a parent's coffin.
That, to me, sounded like they were 'ordered' to do so.

Spencer said this morning, that nowadays it wouldn't happen, which is probably true. But this didn't happen in 1907....it was only 20 years ago, and it shouldn't have happened then either. Personally I think Phil the Greek s most to blame.

What a ghastly lot the Royal can be, when they really try.

By the way, the interview with Spencer makes for interesting listening....very candid.
"duty" can be carp !
I'd look further afield Mikey, and to the opposite sex.
It's what happens.

Thinking about Phil, he's never seemed very warm to the two boys. He didn't like Diana. It seemed as if he was extending that to her children.

Alba....good point, although I can't wholeheartedly agree.

She was divorced from Charles at the time, and Spencer would have had a very strong influence on the funeral arrangements.

He could have stopped the boys from walking behind the coffin if he had tried, but, judging from the interview, he didn't try very hard, or even at all.
We will never know for sure, but I think 'advisers' will have pointed out to both sides, that she was the mother of a future king.

Jo....from what I have read, Phil wasn't that warm to his own kids, let alone the boys. But when you consider his background, and the relationship with his own parents, I suppose you could hardly blame him very much.

10C, I'm convinced that one of them did 20 years ago.

Alba...I presume you mean Diana. What evidence do you have that she was murdered ?

As far as I am concerned, she died principally because she didn't have her seat belt on....no more and no less.

If she had put her seat belt on, then she would still be alive today, as her body guard is.
absolutely no evidence at all.
I'm having one of my conspiracy theory moments.
agree ..seat belt would have saved her
I just don't understand why the Princes walking behind the coffin is any worse than other funeral traditions.

Why is it any worse than a wake with an open coffin.

If children attend a funeral they will at some point have to walk behind the coffin.

OK Alba !
