Why does wood crackle and spit

when its set fire to, has it something to do with it being dry, or have I answered my own question

Caused by miniature explosions from igniting sap vapour - or from water droplets bursting after expansion from heat. Much more likely from burning evergreen timber.
With some wood, conifers eucalyptus etc, there are oils and resins that 'explode'.
