If you purchase a house that has been badly renovated and the faults don't become apparent until after the purchase, ie. leaking pipes, blocked waste pipes, incorrectly installed dry lining. is there any comeback on the person who carried out the renovation.

A survey should have highlighted those problems.
I agree - you should have comeback with the surveyor who obviously wasn't very good at his/her job!
That's why you pay a fortune for a decent survey...........
Buyer beware. It's up to you to check things out - by having a survey done, perhaps.
if Mr Badley was a cowboy builder you stand no chance
If you had a survey of the property and some faults were missed you may have a claim against the person who carried out the survey, there is nothing to stop you asking whoever did the renovation to rectify any alleged faults but you will be relying on their good will, if it exists.
Many people do not have a survey carried out on the grounds of saving money relying on the mortgage lenders survey, this can be dangerous as the mortgage lenders survey is more a valuation
.

very little come back - so long as they did not mislead you.

with my own house, I learnt after a few years that if the previous owner's wife said fondly - oh my husband did that,
then I would be wise to have it pulled down and redone myself.
