the best way to clean silver

I have an old silver spoon that is green and sticky. What is the best way to clean it?

I had a silver tankard that was black so took it to Silvermiths to have it cleaned. He said that once it was clean to just wash it in soapy water once a week to keep it sparkling. I gave it away, so not sure if that worked!

lemon juice and then soapy water, short of getting out the Durashit.
