i think you are right
No elderly neighbours.
ours gets annoyed if people interfere, so we 'observe' him from afar, checking that the lights go on and off etc ...
Hope the neighbours come round to check on me and the OH!
I hope nobody comes round to check on me.
I AM the elderly neighbour now, but I have done my fair share of inviting them to my house for Christmas Day, taking their dinner to them and clearing snow from their paths.
8 houses in the cul-de-sac where I live. At 62 I am the youngest. Everyone else are in their 80's and 90's. They get far more visitors than I do. Though I still keep an eye out.
There are 4 of us who meet at a neighbours house every morning at 11am for tea and chat.We usually talk about the rest of the street so one of us would know if someone fell off their perch.
A real range of ages and abilities here, we all watch out for each other every day of the year. I am never either afraid to ask for assistance or offer it, works just fine.

Its good to know people care & its nice to hear there are people out there WILL go out of their way to, Look for signs! there is just one thing although I do it myself, clearing the snow away from my neighbours paths If the neighbour slips they can sue you? although my neighbours would not but this is the way in our American following UK.
It is not just the elderly that die alone

It is nice to see some people care for others.
Last winter after the snow the path leading to the entrance of our block of flats was icy and treacherous. Not one of the young men living here made any attempt to clear it away. It was left to me, a (at the time) 72 year old female and by far the oldest in the block, to dig a narrow path through to the door. As I'm retired and they are all working I think they expected me to do it. It must be cos I is young for my age:-)
That's an amazing story, TTH.....

No, we don't have any elderly neighbours on our street, TWR -in fact, now I think about it, I am probably one of the oldest :-( - but when I did, some years ago, we did keep an eye on them, but they all had family or more close friends who popped in nearly every day.
I don't know the age of the sheep, which are the only close neighbours around here, so I can't comment on the above.

The nearest neighbours (1/2 mike at least) did phone last year though with all the snow down to check (nice of them) and one of the local farmers used his tractor to help pull me up an icy slope to get back - the car being rear wheel drive. Now it's been swapped out for a rear wheel one and hopefully the slope and bend will not be an issue if the gin and tonic supplements return, can hardly call it a hill.....
I have one but we have never got along - and she has plenty of folk looking out for her so I'll continue to give her a wide berth.
What a sad story TTH.
I have Doris (91) on one side and Kathy (87) the other, they are very well looked after by relatives all year round, but I have their phone nos and ring them on a regular basis.
They both come into mine on xmas eve for Sherry & Mince pies & they tell wonderful stories of xmas when they were small. Facinating stuff.
Kathy goes into the local junior school every xmas and tells them about her life, they love it. They both get xmas hampers from the kids too.

one side there is an elderely couple other side a lady on her own, she is ill at moment but I know her son visits her alot. We speak when we see eachother. my neighbours bring me plants and flowers, and we look out for eachothers houses when each are away.
I've just read that TTH - how sad...
