Had a little accident today. OH went up town and I decided I wanted to go look around in the loft (not good) we haven't got a loft ladder so took a pair of step ladders upstairs, I had a problem getting the ladders to lock but eventually they did, but they looked a bit vertical but I thought go for it. I'm not good on ladders but very slowly crept up the ladder. Got to the top, on top rung just hauling myself up and ladder went over, there I am hanging onto the edge of hatchway, arms gave way and I fell, scraping under sides of arms of hatchway and landing on ladders ouch!! Lay on floor for ages in agony thinking can I get up or not. Eventually I moved ooh the pain. Got over it later, arms are black and blue, I felt very shaken all day, and now my arms are really hurting. I consider myself so lucky I didn't break anything.

OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!! Just listening to that account made me ache!

Take some ibuprofen and be prepared for the fact that by the morning you are going to have aches in places you didn't know you had places.
Gosh Caran you were indeed very lucky to escape breaking anything, you will sadly be more sore tomorrow. Dose up on something to help you sleep.

Like me you are now banned from ladders - promise??
That sounds like an audition for Youtube, Carandrog ;-)

(I'm glad that you're relatively unscathed)

I shouldn't even be doing things like this, I have 2 hospital appointments this week, one for possible hip replacement and the other to investigate lung problems re emphasemia.
Did your OH tell you it serves you right Carandog?!

Lofts are like sheds to many men - it's our private little space! I often spend ages up in our loft pottering about and looking at photos. My wife has never been up there and she says she never wants to - possibly because of all the huge spiders I tell her are up there!
OW OW OW - You were very lucky today and tomorrow you will be very stiff and sore. You need a warm soak, some painkillers, some hot chocolate and a gentle cuddle off the OH. Never do ladders etc when you on your own - in fact don't do ladders at all - that what OH's are for. Take care.

Yes Andyvon he did.Why can you not wait for me to come home and do it?
Invasion of his space Carandog! That's the problem. He'll tell you about the spiders next!
Oh that does sound painful. I do hope you are not too sore tomorrow. I couldn't do that at all, my fear of heights means I can't even stand on a chair!

I can honestly say I will never go up a ladder again, never liked them, always shook as I went u them so never no more I promise.
I hope you are OK Carandog.
I'm glad you didn't break anything, but you sure are going to ache tomorrow!

What on earth possessed you to go in the loft, bearing in mind you have hip problems? You don't need a step ladder, you need a naughty step!

However you need to make a note to OH, next job 'loft ladder'.

Hope I'm not too stiff tomorrow, we are going to Bristol to see "We Will Rock You"
When I lived alone, the only thing that really terrified me was having to go in the loft - it was the bit between the top rung and actually getting in there (and vice versa) that really had me quaking. When I moved out I vowed i would never again use a loft. Consequently, I've not fallen off any ladders, but the house is full of crap!!!!!

I need a house like my parents with a proper set of stairs into the attics!

What exactly did you want from the loft anyway?
BM...I am exactly the same. I can go up a ladder...come down a ladder. But stepping from the loft to the top freaks me out.

Barmaid I suddenly thought I might have clothes in the loft from my fat and thin days, we have loads of suitcases there that might have things in. Having lost a bit of weight I thought it would be a good idea to have a mooch round up there. Not a good idea.
Next time Caran get your bloke to do it! They have few uses, but going in the loft is one of them.

(Although the last time I sent my OH up a ladder it was when I inadvertantly locked us all out a couple of weeks back - I can (like ummmm) go up and down a ladder but the climbing in through the bedroom window was a step too far - he didn't speak to me for about 3 days). lol
I went up when the tank burst.....started crying because I was too scared to come down...Ginge had to come up to get me....lol

When I think of the things I used to do as a child/teenager....that I'll still do...but stepping sideways onto a ladder freaks me out...strange.
Ladders don't worry me.

I once spent many hours running up and down ladders, carrying heavy theatre lamps and lifting them into place above my head (while at the very top of a 20 foot step ladder, with nothing to hold onto), without either concern or injury. I then turned my attention to the sound system and carefully adjusted the settings on the amplifier unit which was positioned near to the edge of the stage. My mistake was to step back to admire my work . . .
